On paper, it looked like a mismatch as the visiting Erie Otters came into tonight's contest having only won four games all season, while the IceDogs although struggling of late, have put together a strong season up to this point. The Otters hung in their with the Dogs for the first period and a half but a four goal outburst in the second period sealed the game for the IceDogs as they went on to record their fourteenth win of the season and two in as many games.
It did not take long for the IceDogs to get on the scoreboard, as forward Barry Sanderson (6) scored at the 1:21 mark, set up beautifully by captain Michael Swift and Alex Pietrangelo to give the Dogs a 1-0 lead. The Otters tied it up at one on a goal by Justin Hodgman (10) mid way through the first period. However, the Dogs restored their lead late in the first, as Andrew Merrett (5) stepped over the line and wired a shot from the top of the circle, beating Erie goaltender Jaroslav Janus.
The second period started off with a flurry of goals by both teams. Erie forward Shayne Taylor (3) tied the game for the Otters at the 2:08 mark of the second putting it by IceDogs goaltender Adrian Volpe, who earned his second start in a row after a solid start on Sunday against Owen Sound. Luca Caputi (17) had the answer for the IceDogs, making a great move to get by the defender before finding the back of the net. But again Erie had an answer, this time by Nick Palmieri scoring a short-handed goal as he capitalized on an IceDogs defensive blunder before wiring it past Volpe. This must have lit a spark for the IceDogs, as they went on to score three goals in a span of four minutes including two in eight seconds. Sanderson (7) started things off with his second goal of the game scoring on the power play at the 9:05 mark of the second. Following his lead, Matt Corrente (2) and Chris DeSousa (7) scored back to goals to put the Dogs ahead 6-3 which is how this game would end after a scoreless third period.
There were many outstanding performances by the IceDogs tonight, starting with first star of the game Barry Sanderson who scored two goals and added an assist. Second star of the game was given to Michael Swift as he had an impressive three assists. Equally impressive was defenceman Alex Pietrangelo who also recorded three assists in the game. Andrew Merrett was named the third star of the game with a goal and two assists. Recognition should also be given to IceDogs rookie goaltender Adrian Volpe who made his second star in a row, making 32 of 35 saves for the win.
With the win the IceDogs improve to 14-12-0-1 on the season while the Otters drop to 4-19-2-1. The IceDogs will look to make it three wins in a row when they travel across the border to take on the Otters in the back end of a home and home series. On Sunday December 2nd the IceDogs will be back at home to face the Ottawa 67s at 2:00 pm at the Gatorade Garden City Complex.
