Penalties Cost IceDogs the Loss in Owen Sound
November 17, 2007
Penalties are hurting the IceDogs this season and the trend continued tonight in Owen Sound against the Attack. At this point in the season, the IceDogs are the most penalized team in the OHL and tonight the Dogs were penalized ten times, which in the end cost them the game.
After the IceDogs jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the second period on goals by Andrew Merrett (5) and Niagara native Alex Friesen (2), the Attack fought back with two goals of their own by Joshua Domingues (2) and Frankie Santini (1) to tie the game at two after two.
The Attack came out strong in the third period, as Wayne Simmonds (13) scored only twenty nine seconds in on the power play to put his team up 3-2. However, the IceDogs quickly answered with a goal of their own as Andrew Agozzino (11) came up with the puck after a scramble in front of the net and put it by Attack goalie Scott Stajcer, to tie the game at three.
The game did not stay tied for long, as Owen Sound took the lead on a power play goal by forward Matt Carter (14) at the 12:06 mark of the third period. The IceDogs had their chances in the final eight minutes of the game but their fate was sealed when Joey Hishon (10) scored on the power play with less then a minute to play in the game, giving the Attack the 5-3 victory.
There were a few bright spots for the IceDogs in this game. Forward Andrew Merrett had a career night, scoring his fourth goal of the season as well as adding two assists. Also, IceDogs rookie Alex Friesen was named the second star of the game after scoring his second goal of the season and adding an assist. It was a good night for the young stars of the IceDogs and it is hoped that this trend will continue into tomorrow night’s contest against the Oshawa Generals.
With the loss the IceDogs fall to 12-9-0-1 on the season while the Attack improves to 7-14-1-0. The IceDogs look to get back in the win column tomorrow night when they visit John Tavares and the Generals at 6:05 pm at the General Motors Centre in Oshawa.
Fans are reminded that the next IceDogs home game is on Sunday Novemeber 25th when the Dogs take on the Owen Sound Attack at 2:00 pm at the Gatorade Garden City Complex. Tickets can be purchased at the Customer Service Desk at the Pen Centre or by visiting www.ticketmaster.ca
