The Niagara IceDogs suffered a tough 4-3 loss to the visiting Ottawa 67’s on Thursday night at the Gatorade Garden City Complex.
The first period saw the IceDogs get off to a tough start, falling behind 1-0 five minutes in. Ottawa would then extend the lead at the 11:52 mark of the period, adding a powerplay marker to make it 2-0 for the visitors. That would remain the score until Luke Mercer would score his first of the season on the powerplay with only 7.4 seconds remaining in the first to cut the Niagara deficit to 2-1 after one. Shots in the period favoured the IceDogs 16-14.
Niagara would come out flying in the second period, outshooting Ottawa 16-4 in the frame, but Ottawa starter Keegan Wilson would be up to the task, stopping all 16 IceDogs shots in the period, while Ottawa would beat IceDogs starter Chris Festarini once, giving Ottawa a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes.
The third period would see the IceDogs battle back, as Mitchell Theoret would score his first of the season to cut the IceDogs deficit to 3-2 only 16 seconds into the period. The IceDogs would not stop there however as Mike Robinson would continue his strong play, striking just over five minutes later to knot things up at 3-3. The teams would trade chances throughout the rest of the period until Ottawa would score on the powerplay with only 2:42 remaining in the third to make it 4-3. The IceDogs would not let up carrying the play during the final minutes and coming close to equalizing on multiple occassions, but it was not meant to be as Ottawa was able to hang on, giving Niagara 4-3 loss. Final shots on the night were 38-25 in favour of the IceDogs.
The IceDogs will now hit the road for the rest of the weekend visiting Sarnia on Saturday night and Windsor on Sunday afternoon. They will then return home a week from tonight when they host the Brampton Battalion at the Gatorade Garden City Complex on October 18th. Great seats for that and all other IceDogs home games are still available and can be purchased at all IceDogs ticketing locations.
