The Niagara IceDogs pulled out a hard fought 2-1 victory over the visiting Barrie Colts at the Gatorade Garden City Complex in front of 2,909 fans Thursday night.
The first period saw the visitors pick up the lone marker as super rookie Aaron Ekblad beat IceDogs starter Mark Visentin to make it 1-0. Shots in the period were 16-12 for Niagara in the period.
The second period saw the newest IceDog Jamie Oleksiak seem to pull the home side even, but the goal was waved off when David Pacan was called for goaltender interference. The fans wouldn't have to wait long however before the home side would actually pull even as Andrew Agozzino beat Barrie goaltender Alex Fotinos on a shorthanded breakaway making it 1-1 after two.
The IceDogs would take over in the third period out shooting Barrie 23-5 and Freddie Hamilton would finally put one by Fotinos on a great shot over the glove, giving Niagara a lead that they would not relenquish, in a 2-1 final.
Shots for the game were 47-27 Niagara, as the goalies stole the show on the night. For his efforts, Barrie goaltender Alex Fotinos was named first star with Freddie Hamilton receiving second star and Agozzino the third.
The IceDogs now head on the road for two more Central Division battles this weekend, visiting Sudbury tomorrow night, followed by a rematch with the Colts in Barrie on Saturday night.
