The Niagara IceDogs picked up a big 4-3 overtime victory over the Sudbury Wolves in their first game back after Christmas vacation on Friday night in Sudbury!
The first period would see the visiting IceDogs strike first, as Brook Hiddink would get the IceDogs on the board with his fourth goal of the season just past the midway point of the first period. That would prove to be the only goal of the period as the IceDogs headed into the intermission up by a score of 1-0. Shots after one favoured Sudbury 21-13.
Sudbury would tie things up early in the second scoring only 59 seconds into the frame to make it 1-1. The IceDogs would answer back minutes later as Jesse Graham would strike on the powerplay to give Niagara the lead once again at 2-1. The score would remain that way until the 14:08 mark of the period when Sudbury would knot things up once again at 2-2. The teams would head into the intermission tied up at that same score, as Sudbury continued to outshoot the IceDogs 21-12.
The IceDogs would once again retake the lead early in the third with a Carter Verhaeghe powerplay goal making it a 3-2 game only 1:19 into the third. Sudbury would answer back with a powerplay goal of their own just prior to the midway point of the third to tie things up once again at 3-3. Neither team would be able to break the deadlock during the rest of the period, sending the Sudbury and the IceDogs into overtime once again. Shots at the end of regulation were 33-19 in favour of Sudbury.
In overtime, the IceDogs would find another gear, carrying the play for much of the period as they outshot Sudbury 4-1 in the frame, and Steven Shipley would put home the overtime winner at 3:44 to give the visitors a big 4-3 win!
The IceDogs will now continue their road trip in Sault Ste. Marie tomorrow night, before returning home to host the Erie Otters on Monday in their annual New Year’s Eve game at 6pm. Single seats and standing room remain for Monday’s game and can be purchased at all IceDogs ticketing locations!
