The Niagara IceDogs fell to the Erie Otters by a score of 3-2 in their exhibition opener in Ancaster on Friday night.
The first period saw IceDogs rookie goaltender Brent Moran steal the show, stopping 14 of 15 shots to keep the IceDogs in it as Niagara headed to the intermission down only 1-0 despite being outshot 15-2 in the period.
The second period saw Erie strike for their second powerplay goal of the night to send the IceDogs behind 2-0 before a midgame goaltending change seemed to spark the visitors. Recently acquired goaltender Bo Bessette relieved Moran near the midway point of the game and the IceDogs soon struck for a goal of their own as Derek Todosichuk found the back of the net, with Broderick Kelly and Bessette picking up assists on the goal. The IceDogs would then tie things up as Anthony DiFruscia was set up by Carter Verhaeghe, tying things up at 2-2 after 40 minutes. Shots after two were 23-16 in favour of Erie.
Erie would retake the lead 6:20 into the third, scoring what would prove to be the only goal of the period, giving the Otters a 3-2 win. Final shots were 40-20 for Erie.
The IceDogs will now return to Niagara to host the Oshawa Generals on Labour Day Monday at 2pm at the Gatorade Garden City Complex. Tickets are only $10 for adults and $5 for youth/seniors, so get your tickets today and bring out the family to wrap up the summer in style on Monday afternoon!
