A new lineup lead to new, and better, results. In the last meeting between these teams, Niagara was missing key players like Dougie Hamilton, Ryan Strome, Alex Friesen, Brock Beukeboom and Mark Visentin, falling 7-1 to the Petes in the IceDogs first game of the season. This time however, Peterborough was without their top scorer Matt Puempel, serving the first of an eight-game suspension and their top defenceman Slater Koekkoek, out with an injury.
The IceDogs’ updated roster was evident early on, as they struck first with just over five minutes left in the first period. During their first power play of the game, with Freddie Hamilton and Andrew Agozzino sideling either set of the net, Agozzino was able to scoop up the rebound off Dougie Hamilton’s shot for his 15th goal of the season.
The second period was evenly-matched early on, but six minutes into the period, Lino Martschini’s seventh goal of the season tied up the game for Peterborough; his goal resulted in 1,500 stuffed animals thrown on the ice for the annual Teddy Bear Toss in support of the Salvation Army. The Petes received some good fortune when Jesse Graham was called for closing his hand on the puck in the crease, which led to an Andrew Yogan penalty shot. Yogan's blocker side attempt did not get past Mark Visentin, however, as the Niagara netminder turned away the shot.
With just under 10 minutes left in the second period, Niagara broke the tie when Dougie Hamilton finished off a give-and-go play with Steven Shipley, tapping in Shipley’s pass for Niagara’s second goal, and lead, of the game. Dougie’s 12th goal of the season matched his goal total for his 2010-11 campaign. But right before the end of the second period, Stephen Nosad’s work in front of the net yielded his fifth of the season and knotted the IceDogs and Petes at two.
Niagara got a quick start to the third period when 2:12 into the period, Myles Doan scored his fourth goal of the season with assists from Brock Beukeboom and Joel Wigle. They continued their offensive attack with less than seven minutes left in regulation as Mitchell Theoret snapped the puck from the far-side circle over goaltender Mike Morrison’s shoulder for his fourth goal in as many games. To cap off the scoring, David Pacan tipped a Dougie Hamilton point shot in front of the net to cash in his 15th goal of the season. The power play goal was the IceDogs’ third of the game.
Niagara heads to Mississauga tomorrow to play their last game before the Hamilton brothers, Ryan Strome and Visentin leave for Team Canada’s selection camp on Saturday, and will head home for a Saturday evening game versus Kingston for the IceDogs’ annual Teddy Bear Toss in support of Niagara Victim Crisis Support Service.
