IceDogs rookie Defenceman Dougie Hamilton has been named the winner of the Ivan Tenant Award for the OHL's Top Academic High School Student. In doing so, Hamilton becomes the third straight IceDog to win the award, following in the footsteps of older brother Freddie who won the award last season and Alex Friesen, who won the award two years ago in his rookie season.
The award came thanks to Dougie's 97% average this year in his grade 11 classes at Governor Simcoe Secondary School. The average is not the result of an easy course load either, with Dougie studying English, biology, chemistry, two maths and physics this year, a solid course load for anyone to keep up with.
The fact that Hamilton was able to keep up in these classes while dealing with the pressures and adjustments of being an OHL rookie makes his achievement all that more impressive.
Hamilton not only excelled in the classroom, but on the ice as well, compiling three goals and 13 assists for 16 points in 64 games, all while accumulating a large amount of ice time as he played a key role in all situation on the IceDogs blueline.
His performance on the ice did not go unnoticed either, as the Ivan Tennant award is the second post season recognition received by Dougie, who was named to the OHL All-Rookie Second Team and a finalist for the Emms Family award as OHL Rookie of the Year last week.
The IceDogs would like to congratulate Dougie on this fantastic accomplishment and look forward to his continued success in the future.
