Colts Spoil IceDogs Comebak, Win in Shootout

November 15, 2007

The Niagara IceDogs faced their division rival Barrie Colts for the fourth time this season and for the third game in a row, found themselves on the losing end of the contest. The Dogs hung in till the end, despite being down many key players due to injury or suspension, but it was not quite enough on this night.

IceDogs forward Jordan Foreman made things interesting for the IceDogs, when he scored to tie the game at four with thirty-four seconds to play in the game. With a Colts player in the box after being called for a delay of game penalty and IceDogs goalie Andrew Loverock out of net for the extra attacker, the Dogs were able to capitalize on the 6-4 man advantage when Foreman put his 8th goal of the season past Colts goaltender Andrew Perugini.

After five minutes of four-on-four hockey solved nothing, the two teams headed to the shootout, the second time this season for the IceDogs. The Colts first shooter Brian Lashoff put the puck by Loverock to give the Colts the one goal edge. After Perugini stopped Michael Swift and Drew Schiestel of the IceDogs and Loverock stoned Vladimir Nikiforov and Stefan Della Rovere of the Colts, Luca Caputi had one last chance to win things for the Dogs, but he put the shot wide, giving Barrie the 5-4 shootout win.

The two teams played an evenly matched game from start to finish. The Colts got on the scoreboard first on a goal by Nikiforov at the 7:23 mark of the first to give Barrie the 1-0 lead. Jordan Foreman answered for the IceDogs scoring his seventh of the season, set up beautifully by Schiestel and Josh Day.

The tie was broken more than half way into the second period as Nikiforov scored his second of the game to give the Colts the 2-1 lead. However, IceDogs rookie Andrew Agozzino knotted the game at two after he wired a wrist shot from the top of the face off circle to beat Perugini. The tie did not last for long as the IceDogs, for the third time in the last two games, gave up a goal in the final minute of a period, this time by the Colts Alex Hutchings to put his team up 3-2 headed into the intermission.

The IceDogs tied things up early in the third period on a goal by defenceman Josh Day, who was set up by Niagara native Alex Friesen off of a hard fought face-off win. But again the Colts played their way back into the lead, as Nikiforov continued his big night with his third goal of the season, giving him a hat trick and his team a 4-3 lead with less then five minutes remaining in play. The Dogs were able to battle back to tie things up in the final minute of play, but it was not enough as the Colts escaped with the 5-4 shootout victory over the IceDogs.

With the shootout loss the Dogs pick up a single point and their record improves to 12-9-0-1, while the Colts improve to 12-9-1-0 which leaves the two teams tied atop the Central Division along with the Brampton Battalion.

The IceDogs continue their road trip on Saturday as they travel to Owen Sound to take on the Attack at 7:30 pm at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre. The Dogs will then wrap up their weekend road trip with a visit to Oshawa on Sunday November 18th to take on OHL superstar John Tavares and the Generals. Puck drops at 6:05 pm at the General Motors Centre in Oshawa.
