IceDogs defenseman Alex Pietrangelo and Team Canada suffered a heartbreaking 6-5 overtime loss to the United States, sending the Canadians home with the silver medal. Canada made a thrilling comeback from a 5-3 deficit in the third period to tie things at 5-5, but ultimately could not get the overtime goal they needed to take home the win.
Pietrangelo had an excellent tournament tallying three goals, and nine assists to lead all tournament defensemen in scoring with 12 points. For his efforts Pietrangelo was named the tournaments top defenseman.
Earlier on Tuesday, IceDogs rookie goaltender Petteri Simila and Team Finland defeated Russia in the fifth place game by a score of 5-4. Simila got his first start of the tournament for Finland, before being relieved by Joni Ortio prior to the start of the second period. The appearance was Simila's second of the tournament, having also seen action in relief of Ortio during preliminary round play versus Sweden.
The fifth place finish is the best result for the Finnish team since taking home bronze at the 2006 tournament.
