Canada Remains Undefeated with 10-2 Win Over Denmark

December 29, 2011

Canada improved to 3-0 at the World Junior Championship with a 10-2 win over Denmark on Thursday night.

Mark Stone (Brandon, WHL) and Brandon Gormley (Moncton, QMJHL) each had two goals to lead Canada to a 10-2 victory over Denmark on Thursday night.  Niagara IceDogs forward Freddie Hamilton chipped in a goal and an assist, while Niagara netminder Mark Visentin was solid in goal, making 22 saves in the win.

Quinton Howden (Moose Jaw, WHL) opened the scoring for Canada just 2:34 into the first period.  Brett Connolly (Tampa Bay, NHL) doubled the Canadian lead with a shorthanded goal minutes later.  Stone would then tally his first goal of the game, extending his goal-scoring streak to three games.  Ryan Strome (Niagara, OHL) would finish off the scoring in the first period, sending the game into the intermission with Canada leading 4-0.

Defenceman Scott Harrington (London, OHL) got in on the scoring 25 seconds into the second period to increase the lead to five goals.  Stone added his second goal of the game over four minutes later, retaking the tournament lead in goals, while making it half a dozen for Canada.  Freddie Hamilton tipped home a Harrington point shot to extend the lead to 7-0, where it would remain heading into the final period of play.

Denmark would score twice in the third period to break up the shutout, but it would not be enough as Canada answered back with three goals of their own.  Brendan Gallagher (Vancouver, WHL) and Gormley, twice, recorded the goals for Canada in the third and final frame.

The 10-2 win gives Canada a 3-0 record in the tournament, which leads Pool B.  Canada's next game is Saturday, December 31st against the United States at 8:00pm ET.
